161. SAMUEL5 N. BURCHFIELD (Jane4 Neill, Mary3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born July 1860 in Pennsylvania; married (first) MARGARET ELIZABETH BLACK, who was a second cousin: born September 1862 in Pennsylvania; she was a daughter of William and Sarah Ann (Neill) Black.339 Samuel would be the Samuel Burchfield, age 19, listed as a child in the 1880 census for Neilltown, Harmony Township.340 In 1900, Samuel, Margaret and family were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Samuel was listed as a physician.341

(Tentative) Samuel N married (second) ISABELLE B. [—?—]; born circa 1891 in Scotland. In 1930, Samuel N., Isabelle, and children by Isabelle were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Samuel was still enumerated as a medical doctor (census page 6B).

CHARLES5 RUPERT CHURCH (Nancy4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 15 August 1873 in Pennsylvania; died 21 November 1956 in Titusville, Pennsylvania; married 12 October 1904 MARY (Minnie) IRENE PATTERSON, born 23 November 1874 in Pennsylvania; died 19 September 1963 in Titusville. Although Charles Rupert was the son of Charles Rupert, he was not referred to as "Jr." Mary was a daughter of Elisha and Ellen (Tefft) Patterson. Elisha Gilbert Patterson, her father, was called Gilbert.


Titusville—Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Mary Patterson Church, 88, of Titusville, who died Thursday night in the Titusville Hospital.
Mrs. Church was a member of a pionner family in the oil regions, a daughter of Elisha Gilbert and Ellen Tefft Patterson. She was born in Titusville in 1874.
She was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church and served as Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a charter member of the Titusville Garden Club and was instrumental in setting up the kindergarten in Titusville.
She spent the year of 1900 in Japan, but the remainder of her life was in Titusville, where she married Charles Rupert Church in 1904. He died in 1956.
Two daughters, Miss Laura Church, Indiana, Pa; Miss Mary Church, executive director of the Titusville YMCA; three sons, Charles, Houston, Tex.; Gilbert and Neill Church, Wilmington, Del., are among the survivors.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon.—The Derrick (Oil City, Pennsylvania), 21 September 1963; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.

Mary and Charles spent their entire lives in Titusville, and although Charles spent a few months as a bookkeeper, and clerk, he spent a career of over 60 years in the hardware business. In 1910 Charles and family, including Nancy, “mother-in-law, born circa 1827" [she in fact was born about 1829] in Pennsylvania, were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Charles was listed as a bookkeeper.343

269 i. Laura6 Church; born 17 September 1905; died 10 September 1982 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Laura graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University (1927). She taught math for 37 years at Indiana High School, Indiana, Pennsylvania. Laura did not marry.

270 ii. Charles Rupert Church Jr.; born 14 February 1908; died 8 February 1984 in Houston, Texas; married Florelle Cox; born 8 February 1910 in Smithville, Texas; died 14 April 1996 in Houston, Texas. Charles graduated from Cornell University. He worked in the oil and gas business for his entire career. Charles and Florelle had two children: (a) Mary Lou Church, born 17 March 1937; died December 2001 (in a car crash), probably in Enid, Oklahoma; and (b) Charles Rupert Church III.
  271 iii. Gilbert Patterson Church; born 8 March 1910; died 25 September 1993 in Wilmington, Delaware; married Winona Skinner; born (private). Gilbert graduated from Cornell University. He worked for DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. Gilbert and Winona had two children: (a) Sharon Church and (b) Gilbert Patterson Church, Jr.
  272 iv. Mary Church; born (private). Mary, a Vassar College graduate (1934), did not marry; she worked in Warren, Pennsylvania, and in Titusville, where she was Director of the YMCA after returning home to care for her elderly parents. Both she and Laura continued to maintain the family records and preserved them for their nieces and nephews.
  273 v. William Neill Church; born 5 June 1915; died 14 October 2006 in Wilmington, Delaware; married Dorothy Harriet Gray; born (private). Neill graduated from the University of New Mexico (1941). Neill worked for the Dupont Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Neill and Dorothy had four children: (a) William (Bill) Neill Church, Jr.; (b) Chipley Marie Church, (c) Justin Gray Church; born 23 February 1949 in Wilmington, Delaware; died 14 October 1976 in Bangkok, Thailand; and (d) Jonathan Gray Church.
  274 vi. John Fertig Church; born 23 December 1917; died 9 September 1962 in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania; married Jeanne Richmond White; born 12 March 1917; died 6 June 2006 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Jeanne was a daughter of Raymond and Irene (Richmond) White. As was true of his brothers Charles and Gilbert and John's wife, Jeanne, John graduated from Cornell University (1939). He worked for the Kewanee Oil Company of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
John and Jeanne had three children:
(a) Susan Patterson Church. Susan was most generous in providing information on Neills and Churchs, including photographs. She is author of "Descendants of John Lytle,"Descendants of John Neill" (see also Acknowledgements) and "Hiberden: A North Idaho Adventure" (2009)
(b) Patricia Sargent Church.
(c) Christopher White Church; born September 11, 1954 in Philadelphia; died August 6, 1979 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

WILLIAM 5 LYNNVILLE NEILL (Joseph4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 18 June 1865 in Warren, Pennsylvania; married (first) in New Orleans SOPHIE RICHMOND, born July 1875 in Louisiana; married (second), in 1925, MRS. VIRGINIA PRICE DUNLAP; born circa 1864 in Tennessee; she had three sons by a previous marriage (Devereau Dunlap, Bernard Price Dunlap and Hugh Dearborn Dunlap).344

In 1900, William, Sophie and child William, Jr., (enumerated as Chillian) were living in Magnolia District, Wetzel County, West Virginia (census page 196), where William was listed as an abstractor (searches and examines records, e. g. real estate and mortages) In 1910, William and family were living in Lexington, Kentucky (census page 157B), where William was a service officer for Standard Oil. Presumably the family soon moved to Dallas, Texas, where son William Lynnville Neill, Jr., was pictured as a senior in the Bryan Street High School yearbook of 1917.344b In 1930, William and second wife Virginia P. and all children of Sophie except William Lynnville Neill, Jr., were living in Highland Park, Dallas, Texas, where William (Sr.) was enumerated as manager of the Legal Department (census page 54A). Also in the family in 1930 were Virginia's children by first husband: Bernard Dunlap and Hugh D. Dunlap.

  275 i. William Lynnville Neill, Jr.; born 28 June 1899 in West Virginia; married Alyoe (?Alyce) [—?—]; born circa 1905 in Texas. In 1917 in Dallas, Texas, William was pictured as a senior in the Bryan Street High School yearbook of 1917.

WILLIAM5 CUNNINGHAM NEILL (Samuel4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 12 April 1872 in Titusville, Pennsylvania; died 23 October 1941; married FANNY COCKLEY born circa 1879 in Ohio, “of Shelby, Ohio.”345 In 1910, William and family were living in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, where William was a lawyer.346 In 1920, William, married, was living as a lodger in Los Angeles, Calfornia; no occupation reported (census page 14B). In 1930, Fanny, divorced, was in Santa Monica, California, with her son William (census page 13B).

In 1935, Phillip Sinclair and Mary Leila were on the New York passenger list of the Southern Prince, sailing from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, to New York City, as reported in ancestry.com.

ANNIE5 NEILL (Samuel4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 22 July 1874 in Titusville; married 7 October 1897 in Warren, Pennsylvania, CHRISTY PAYNE, born circa 1874 in Pennsylvania “of Titusville.”347 Christy was a lawyer in 1910 and a corporation lawyer for People's Gas in 1920, when the family was living in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.348 Also in the family in 1910, was Julia L. Neill, mother-in-law, widow, born circa 1847 in ?England [no, in Prince Edward Island, Canada)].

183. IDA5 JANE BLACK (Sarah4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1866 in Pennsylvania; married NELSON A. SHELMADINE,349 born circa 1859 in Pennsylvania. The family lived in Pleasantville, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where Nelson was enumerated as an oil producer in 1910 (page 5A) and with no occupation in 1920 (page 4B).

  285 i. Marquerite6 Black Shelmadine; born circa 1892. In 1920, Marquerite, single, was living with her parents in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.
  286 ii. Stanley Nelson Shelmadine; born 3 April 1895 in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; married Beatrice Dickinson; daughter of A. Warren and Caroline (Olney) Dickinson. In 1942, re Stanley's World War II Draft Registration Card, Stanley and wife were living in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; at this this time Stanley was employed by the Keystone Pipe and Supply Company of Cunningham, Butler County, Pennsylvania. No information on childred.


184. JOHN5 JORDAN BLACK (Sarah4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born May 1858; married (first) HATTIE VIOLA DEWEY; married (second) CAROLINE HOUSER;350 born August 1877 in Ohio. In 1900, John, Caroline and daughter Florence (by first wife Hattie) were living as boarders in Brockway, Pennsylvania, in the household of Frederick and Emma (Black) Cato, who was a sister of John J. Black (census page 7B). John J. was enumerated as an oil producer.

  287 i. Florence Edith Black; born December 1887 in Pennsylvania; married G. G. Martin and had four children.

BURCHFIELD, who was a second cousin;352; born July 1860 in Pennsylvania. In 1900, Samuel, Martha and family were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Samuel was listed as a physician; married (second) H. H. NOYES. 187. WILLIAM5 CARL BLACK (Sarah4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born April 1862 in Pennsylvania;354 married ANNA L. MERRILL;355 born September 1872 in Pennsylvania. William C. was a physician. In 1900, the family lived in Scio Valley, North Township, Harrison County, Ohio (census page 14B). By 1910, the family was in Tulsa, Oklahoma (page 4). William died before the 1920 federal census, at which time Anna and children were still in Tulsa (page 4A). Also in the family in 1920 was daughter Margarie and husband Dewey Mills.

In 1920, Dewey and Margarie were living with Margarie's widowed mother in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where William was enumerated as a bookkeeper in the National Bank and Margarie was enumerated as a stenographer in the National Bank..


191. CLIFTON5 HOMER BLACK (Sarah4 Neill, Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 15 April 1874;356 died 4 March 1966 in Los Angeles, California (re California Death Index, 1940-1977); married (first) LYDE? MCCABE; married (second) EDNA MCKALIP; born circa 1875 in Pennsylvania.357 In 1900, Clifton, single and living with his parents, was enumerated as a civil engineer. In 1920, Clifton, Edna and children (all believed to be children of Clifton's first wife, Lyde) were living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Clifton was listed as sales manager for a steel wire company (census page 5B). By 1930 the family had moved to Los Angeles, Californai, where Clifton was enumerated as a salesman of wire rope (page 17B).

In 1930, Charles and Marion, no children, were living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Charles was enumerated as a traffic manager for an oil company (page 2B).

295 ii. Lemoyne Black; born circa 1909 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, Lemoyne, single and living with his father and step-mother in Los Angeles, was enumerated as a delivery man for a tool company.

294 iii. Margaret Black; born circa 1911 in Pennsylvania; married Joseph Fuller.



200. DAISY5 M. MCCRUM (Joseph4 McCrum, Sarah3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born February 1877 in Pennsylvania; married RAY LEE SHREVE; born 2 September 1881 in Warren, Pennsylvania;358 died September 1966 in Pleasantville, Venango County, Pennsylvania (re Social Security Death Index). Ray was a son of Perry and Ellen Shreve. In 1920, Ray, Daisy and son Robert were living in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where Ray was listed as a furniture merchant (census page 3A). By 1930, Daisly had probably died, and Ray and second wife (married circa 1926) Josephine [—?—]; born circa 1886 in Pennsylvania, were living in Titusvlle, where Ray was still enumerated as a furniture merchant.

  296 i. Robert6 M. Shreve; born circa 1904 in Pennsylvania. In 1930 (tentative) Robert M., living in Chicago, Illinois, head of household, single, was listed as a draftsman; also in the household was his partner in the archiecture office Edward P. Lockart (census page 24B).
