33. JANE4 NEILL (Mary3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1828 in Pennsylvania; married JESSE BURCHFIELD, born circa 1824 in Pennsylvania. Jesse was a farmer; lived in Neilltown area of Forest County, Pennsylvania.207 Jesse's first wife was Nancy Ann Porter. Jesse and Nancy had child Benjamin Franklin Burchfield, who I have listed as a child of Jesse and Jane (Neill) Burchfield.

Burchfield, born July 1885 in Pennsylvania.208 There was a Max C. Burchfield, born in Pennsylvania, circa 1886, who was living with wife Sarah J. [—?—], born circa 1886 in Pennsylvania, in Dormont, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1930 (census page 7B); he was a commercial salesman for a publishing company; no children were reported.

JOSIAH4 NEILL (Mary3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 6 March 1842,210 died 1903; buried in Neilltown Cemetery, Forest County, Pennsylvania; married 23 December 1886211 LETHA (ELETHA) BELL, born 16 September 1862; died 17 June 1931; buried in Neilltown Cemetery, re their stones.212 In 1900 the family was living in Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania, where Josiah was listed as a farmer (census page 9B—faded census page).

Victor Lynford Neill; born 18 March 1891; died December 1974, last residence being Deland, Volusia County, Florida.; married (?first) Nellie [—?—]; born circa 1890 in Pennsylvania; married (?second) Martha [—?—]; born circa 1896 in Pensylvania. In 1910, Victor and Nellie, no children reported, were living in Harmony Township, Forest County, where Victor was listed as a farmer (census page 9A). Living next to Victor and Nellie in 1910 were Victor's parents Josiah and Letha Neil (page 9A). In 1918, re Victor's World War I Draft Registration Card, Victor, wife and child were in Harmony Township, where Victor was reported to be a tool dresser working in Tidioute, Pennslyvannia. In 1930, Victor and Martha, no children reported, were living as lodgers in Bradford, McKean County, Pennsylvania, where Victor was enumerated as a driller (page 14B).

41. NANCY4 (Nannie) NEILL (Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1829; died, of bronchitis, 28 May 1914 in Titusville, Pennsylania;213 married, 31 August 1869, CHARLES RUPERT CHURCH of New York City; he was born 20 March 1834 in Dublin, Ireland; died 18 January 1873 in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.214

Charles and first wife Elizabeth Tilden (died 23 September 1867) probably married in the early 1860s and perhaps lived in Brooklyn, New York, before coming to Titusville in 1865 and opening a china shop during the oil excitement. In 1870, Charles and Nannie, no children reported, were living next to Nannie's parents in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Charles was enumerated as a crockery merchant. Nancy was two months pregnant in 1873 when Charles died of tetanus. He was age thirty eight and Nancy had just turned forty four. In 1880, Nannie and son Charles Rupert Church were still living in Titusville (page 250). In 1920, Nannie was living with son Charles and his family in Titusville.

43. JOSEPH4 ANDERSON NEILL (Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1834; died of heart failure 5 March 1896 in Washington D. C.; married ELIZABETH PENNELL, born circa 1836; died 29 January 1916; buried in Woodland Cemetery, Titusville, Pennsylvania.215

Joseph was a lawyer.216 “Joseph A Neill was financially ruined, and the wealth which William T. Neill had spent a lifetime in gathering was suddenly swept away in the crash of the fall of 1873” (from Bates, 1899), page 826). In 1880, Joseph, Lizzie, and children were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania where Joseph was listed as a retired lawyer.217

According to an obituary in the Titusville Morning Herald, 4 February 1876,218 “Mrs. Elizabeth (Bickham) Pennell [mother of Elizabeth Pennell who married Joseph A. Neill] died in her 80th year. One of her daughters was Mrs. J. A. Neill of Titusville and a son was a J. H. Pennell of Neillsburg [sic].” Elizabeth (Bickham) Pennell’s husband was William Pennell.219

  168 ii. Alice Neill; born 12 December 1863 in Warren, Pennsylvania; married John J. Carter; born 16 June 1842 in Westport, Ireland 1843; died 3 January 1917; immigrated to North America in circa 1846. Widow Alice Neill Carter applied for a passport for a trip to Hong Kong in 1920, at which time Alice gave her permanent home as New York, New York. Alice, as a widow, had several passport applications. The 1910 federal census reported Alice did not have children, either living or dead.221 In 1910, John J. and Alice were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where John was enumerated as an oil producer (census page 5A).
NEW 2010 INFORMATION:221b John J. Carter's first wife was Emma Gibbs, died 6 February 1902. John and Emma (Gibbs) Carter had five children. Lieutenant John J. Carter was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his action at Antietam, 17 September 1862. John J. was a successful oil man, having been associated with Standard Oil and also founding his own oil company, Carter Oil Company. His papers, including correspondence, diaries and notes, are housed in the American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming. John married his second wife, Alice Neill, nine years before he died. They did not have children. The Carter house in Titusville, Pennsylvania, was still standing in 2010, having been sold in 1926 to the McKinney family and extensively remodeled. In 1963, McKinney heirs donated the estate to the Universty of Pittsburgh's Titusville campus.

170 iv. Frances Isabel Neill; born 24 July 1871 in Warren Pennsylvania. Francis apparently did not marry. In 1920, she was living with her widowed sister Alice N. Cartin in Manhatten, New York, where both were enumerated as artists, painters (page 5A). In 1930, Francis, head of household, with two roomers, was still living in Manhatten and enumerated as an artist.(page 16A). Francis had several passport applications in the early twentieth century. Francis Isabel Neill is cited in Who Was Who in American Art. SAMUEL4 TATE NEILL (Jane3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 16 July 1841222 in Neilltown, present–day Forest County, Pennsylvania; died of heart failure 4 August 1896 in Cape May, New Jersey, “one of the most talented and successful members of the Crawford and Warren County bar;”223 married 15 June 1871 JULIA LAURA SINCLAIR; born circa 1847 in Prince Edward Island (Canada).

In 1880, Samuel (indexed as S. F.), Julia and children were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Samuel as listed as a lawyer224 Also in the household in 1880 were Samuel's unmarried sister Mary Jane, widowed sister Julia A. Berry, and unmarried brother Louis E. Neill.

JOSEPH4 MCCASLIN (James3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born March 1831; died 1904; buried Neilltown Cemetery, Harmony Township, present–day Forest County; married (first) JANE ANDERSON,226 born 30 April 1833; died 24 February 1863, re her stone; buried in Neilltown Cemetery.227 In 1860, Joseph and Jane were living with his parents in Allegheny Township.228 Joseph married (second) SARAH (SARRELL?) MCELHOE (a daughter of William and Barbara McElhoe), born 17 June 1848 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania; died 13 February 1934; buried in Neilltown Cemetery.229 In 1880, Joseph and Sarah and family were still in Allegheny Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where Joseph was still farming (page 422). By 1900, Joseph and Sarah were living by themselves in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio, where Joseph was enumerated as a landlord—they were living next to their duaghter Bertha Shattuck and her family.(page 27B).

In 1880, Benjamin, single, was living with his father and step-mother Sarah McCaslin in Allegheny Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. In 1900, the family was in Perrysburg Village, Wood County, Ohio, where Benjamin was enumerated as an oil superintendent (page 4B). By 1930, Carrie had died and Benjamin was living with his son ralph and his family in Saint Louis, Missouri.

In 1930, the family was in Ross Township (now the city of Northwood), Wood County, Ohio, where Raymond was a sales manager, motor oil (page 1A).

In 1900, the family lived in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio, where Ellis was listed as a pumper, oil fields; they were living next to Bertha's parents; also in the family in 1900 was Ellis's brother Elmer L. Shattuck; born June 1880 in Pennsylvania (census page 273). In 1910, the family had moved to Justice Precinct 6, Jefferson County, Texas, where Ellis was enumerated as a stationary engineer (page 13B). By 1920, Elllis, Bertha and children Marie and Lawrence were in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas, where Ellis was an oil scout (page 2B).

177 v. Calla McCaslin; born May 1871; died 1961; married Andrew Verne Clinger; born 14 August 1872; died 8 February 1976, at age 103, in Titusville, Pennsylvania. A. V. Clinger was a successful oil man, mainly in Triumph Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where the family lived in 1900 (census page 5A) and 1910 (page 5B). In 1920 (page 9B) and 1930 (page 3B), the family lived in Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania. A. V. was enumerated as an oil producer for all these censuses. Also in the family in 1910 and 1930 was Calla's mother Sarah McCaslin.

A. V. CLINGER, FOUNDER OF OIL COMPAY, DIES
Titusville — Andrew V, Clinger, 103, former resident of Meadville road, Titusville RD 5, oil pioneer of the past century and founder of Clinger Oil Co. in Tidioute, died at 1:20 am Sunday in Grandview Extended Care at Titusville where he had lived for the past three years.
Mr. Clinger was born August 14, 1872 in Warren County, a son of Amos and Maria Carson Clinger. He lived most of his life in Tidioute.
He was self-employed as an oil producer in the Neilltown, Fagundus and Pleasantville areas. While he referred to himself as an oil driller, Mr. Clinger at various times worked in all phrases of oil exploration and drilling and formed the highly successful oil company in Tidioute.
Mr. Clinger also was one of the principal founders of the Allegheny National Forest. . . .
His wife, the former Calla McCaslin, died in 1961.
He is survived by a son, Dr. O. W. Clinger of Rochester, N. Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Elliot (Florence) Grandin of Titusville: 7 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Children of Andrew Verne and Calla (McCaslin) Clinger known from federal censuses and obituaries (all born in Pennsylvania):
(a) Louis Clinger; born January 1894; apparently did not marry. She lived with her parents in Tidioute.
(b) Florence Clinger; born December 1899; married Elliot C. Grandin; born 23 September 1898; died February 1958; internment in Tidioute, Pennsylvania, cemetery. Elliot's obituary is in Warren Times Mirror (Warren, Pennsylvania), 25 February 1958; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com. He was a son of William James and Harriet (Culver) Grandin. According to his obituary, he was survived by Florence and five children. Elliot attended Tidioute schools and graduated from Princeton in 1920. He was an ensign in naval aviation during World War I. He eventually established the Grason Corporation.
(c) Orris W. Clinger; born 21 November 1905; died 21 September 2006, last residence being Gloverville, Fulton County, New York. Orris married and had a family. He was a psychiatrist and for several years was attached to the Warren State Hospital in North Warren, Pennsylvania.

Orris W. Clinger M. D. Dr. Clinger is a graduate of Princeton University and of the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. He was in private practice for several years prior to military service as lieutenant commander in the Medical Corps, United States Naval Reserves, from 1942 to 1946. He is a diplomate in psychiatry of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. At present he is clinical director of Warren State Hospital, Warren. Pennsylvania. Other publications by Dr. Clinger appeared in the Journal of American Medical Association. From an article that appeared in Psychiatric Journal, Volume, 25, Number 1, December 1951

49. WILLIAM4 S. MCCASLIN (James3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1832 in Pennsylvania; died 7 February 1890;232 married ELIZABETH MCFATE, born circa 1836 in Pennsylvania.233 Elizabeth was a daughter of Samuel McFate, who was a son of Jane (Culbertson) McFate (see #47 of McFate Descendants Report). In 1870, the family was in Harmony Township;234 in 1880, the family was still in Harmony Township, living in Neilltown, Forest County, where William was enumerated as a laborer; also in the household in 1870 and 1880 was Elizabeth’s mother, Elizabeth (Black) McFate.

SARAH4 ANN NEILL (Nancy3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 26 August 1833 in Pennsylvania; died 10 February 1915; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; Forest County, Pennsylvania; married WILLIAM WALLACE BLACK, born 28 May 1828 in Pennsylvania; died 27 September 1913; buried in Neilltown Cemetery.236 Bell (1890), page 1111, gives a biographical sketch of Sarah and William’s son, Wilbur, see below, and reports William being an early oil man in the Pithole, Allegheny Township, Venango County, area. In 1880, the family was enumerated in Neilltown, Forest County.237 By 1900, William, Sarah and two youngest children, Clifton and Harry, had moved to Crafton, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (census page 5A).

  182 i. Wilbur5 Parkinson Black; born 1 March 1855 in Tidioute; died 2 December 1922; buried in Neilltown Cemetery;239 married 17 February 1885 Edith H. Harris, daughter of James Harris of Creston, Iowa. Wilbur Black was an oil producer and lived in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, after having gone west and mined for gold and silver in Colorado and Utah. He returned to Venango County in 1886.240

They apparently did not have children. 1n 1910, the couple was living with Charlotte's father, William Drew, in Wabash Township, Adams County, Indiana (census page 11A), where Robert was enumerated as a driller in the oil fields. In 1920, Robert and Charlotte were in Kansas City, Missouri, where Robert was listed as a saleman for Blake Steel (page 5A). By 1930, Robert and Charlotte had moved to La Mesa, San Diego County, California; no occupation listed for Robert (page 6B).

Listed as boarders in the same household were John J. and Caroline Black, John J. being Emma Cato's brother. Also listed was Florence Black, born December 1887; she would have been a daughter of John J. Black and first wife Hattie (Dewey) Black.

61. NANCY4 ELIZABETH MCCASLIND (John3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 1842; died 1920; married in 1863 HENRY JOSEPHUS DUNHAM, born 18 June 1842,244 died 5 March 1929.245 Josephus Dunham is buried in Neilltown Cemetery, with wife, Elizabeth, and infant son (no name); died 20 October 1873. Also buried in Neilltown Cemetery is a William Dunham, 1866–1939.246

There is a biographical sketch of H. J. Dunham on page 1080 of Bell (1890). Bell mentions H. J. Dunham marrying Nancy E. McCaslin, daughter of John McCaslin of Oil Creek Township. “ [H. J. Dunham] was ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church of Neillsburg [sic] and a member of the Knights of Maccabees.” See the section“ The Concord Cemetery and Church” at the end of Generation Three for information on Josephus’s connection to this church. Henry Josephus Dunham was William and Susan Dunham’s only child, except for their adopted daughter, Lina Steele, Mrs. G. B. Spangler.247 This G. B. Spangler was probably George W. B. Spangler, a child of George and Salinda (Renninger) Spangler, and therefore a half–brother to Deliah Spangler who married Robert M. Watson, a son of James and his first wife Susannah (McConnell) Watson. see #23 of Watson Descendants Report.”

In 1880, Henry J. and Elizabeth were in Allegheny Township, Venango County, where Henry was listed as a farmer. Living three dwelling from Henry and Elizabeth were Henry’s parents, William Dunham, born circa 1802 and Susan Dunham, born circa 1813 in New York state.248 In 1900, Henry, Nancy and daughter Jennie were still in Allegheny Township (Pleasantville), Venango County, where Henry was still farming (census page 3B

A Henry Dunham, born circa 1837, was enumerated with apparently other siblings in the household of Edwin (born circa 1800) and Jane C. Dunham (born circa 1805) in Allegheny Township, Venango County, in 1850.249 But this would not be Henry Josephus Dunham, the only child of William and Susan Knight Dunham.

In 1900, the couple was living in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania (census page 9A). By 1920 J. M. and Myrtle were living in Randoph Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania (page 2B). In 1930, Myrtle, widow was still living in Randolph Township (page 13A). Myrtle Lupher was still alive in 1967 as reported in the obituary of her sister Jane D. Benedict. No information on children.
  196 iii. Herbert M. Dunham; born May 1875; married Cassie [—?—], born April 1878 in Pennsylvania. In 1900, Herbert and Cassie, no children, were living in Allegheny Township, Venango County, where Herbert was enumerated as a day laborer.251 Do not confuse Herbert M. Dunham with Herbert I. Dunham, born circa 1876 in Venango County, Pennsylvania; married Carrie [—?—]; born circa 1877. Herbert I. Dunham was a son of Daniel and Susan Dunham. They also lived in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, area for a time.

  198 v.. Jane (Jennie) Bell Dunham; born 21 August 1884; died 15 February 1967 in Titusville, Pennsylvania; married 24 June 1908 Leo Orville Benedict, born 4 January 1883 in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; died 6 February 1942; he was a son of Orville S. and Mary E. Benedict. Both Jane and Orville were from Pleasantville.252 Jane's obituary is in the Derrick (Oil City, Pennsylvania), 28 February 1967; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry,com. In 1910, Leo and Jane A. (Dunham) Benedict and son Robert were living in Allegheny Township, Venango County (probably in Pleasantville), Pennsylvania, where Leo was working on an oil lease (page 6B). In 1930, Leo, Jane and eight children were enumerated in Pleasantville, Venango County, where Leo was listed as an oil producer (page 1B).

64. JOHN4 WILSON MCCASLIN (John3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born circa 1847; married ADDIE (ADA) PARKER, born circa 1855.253 In 1880 William, Addie and family were living next door to John's parents in Oil Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.254
Children of John and Addie (Parker) McCaslin:
(a) Edwin McCaslin, born circa 1877 in Pennsylvania; died 18 January 1896, having fallen from a derrick;255.
(b) Earl Wilson McCaslin, born 25 August 1879 in Pennsylvania; married Estella (Stella) Garlow; born 1875 in Ohio. Earl and Stella probably did not have children. The couple was living in the household of Stella's parents, Perry and Margaret Garlow, in 1910 in Pulaski Township, Williams County, Ohio, where Earl was enumerated as a tool dresser (census page 9B). In 1920, Earl and Stella resided in Augusta, Butler County, Kansas, where Earl was a machinist in a machine shop. By 1930, the couple was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Earl was enumerated as a machinist for the Tool Suppy Company (page 8B). In 1942, re Earl's World War II Draft Registration Card, Earl was working for Buckeye Traction Ditcher in Hancock, Ohio; no indication of Stella at this time.



66. JOSEPH4 MCCRUM (Sarah3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 4 September 1838 in Pennsylvania; married 21 February 1860 ISABELLA BECK, born March 1840 in New York state; she was a daughter of James and Margaret Beck.

There is a biography of Joseph McCrum in Bates (1899), including children of Joseph and Isabella (Beck) McCrum.256 Similar but not as detailed information is also in the “Neill Papers,” pages 11 and 22. Joseph was a harness maker by profession. For example, he was enumerated as a harness maker in 1870 when the family was living in Titusville, Pennsylvania. He went into the oil business in the early 1860s in Titusville. In 1894 he was appointed postmaster of Titusville, where he was also the deputy sheriff in 1876. In 1883–1884, Joseph, a Democrat, was a member of the Pennsylvania state legislature.257 In 1900, Joseph J. was enumerated as "mayor, city" (census page 2B); (his official position was President of Tiusville City Council) In 1910, Isabella, widow, was living with her daughter Daisy Shreves and her family in Titusville, Pennsylvania.

NANCY4 ELIZABETH MCCRUM (Sarah3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 1842, Pennsylvania; died 1923; buried in Neilltown Cemetery, Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania; married (first) LEWIS W. BROWN, born 1840 in New York state; died 1908; buried in Neilltown Cemetery.259 Nancy married (second) [—?—] BROWERS. Nancy and Lewis were living in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1870 and 1880, where Lewis was enumerated as an oil producer in 1870 and with no occupation in 1880.260 In 1900, Lewis, Elizabeth and daughter Lenora were still living in Titusville, where Lewis was enumerated as a plumber (page 8A). In 1920, Elizabeth Browers was living with her daughter Lenora Hewes and her family in Titusville, Pennsylvania.

  201 i. Lenora4 M. Brown; (twin), born March 1871; married John (or Joel) F. Hewes; born circa 1870 in Massachusetts. In 1900, Lenora, single and living with her parents, was enumerated as a school teacher. In 1910 (page 10A) and 1920 (page 1A), Joel, Lenora and son Lawrence lived in Titusville, where Joel was in the jewelery business. By 1930, Joel and Lenora were living by themselves in Titusville (page 1A).
Child of Joel and Lenora (Brown) Hewes known from federal cenuses:
(a) Lawrence F. Hewes; born 3 February 1892 in New York state. In 1910 (page 10A) and 1920 (page 1A), Lawrence, single and living with his parents, was enumerated as a jeweler. In 1918, re Lawrence's World War I Draft Registration Card, Lawrence's occupation was listed as a watch maker.
  202 ii. Lolo Brown; (twin), born March 1871; married Frank L. Neese; born circa 1869 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, Frank and Lola were living by themselves in Titusville, Pennsylvania, where Frank was listed as retired (page4A).



70. EMMA4 CAROLINE NEILL (Sarah3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born November 19 1856; died 1936; buried in Siggins Cemetery, Hickory Township, Forest County;262 married ANDREW JACKSON SIGGINS, born 12 June 1845 in West Hickory, Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania; died 11 June 1918; buried in Siggins Cemetery. In 1900, A. Jackson and Emma and daughter Alice were living in Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania, where A. Jackson was listed as a farmer (census page 10B).

Andrew Jackson Siggins, aged 73, died at 3:30 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon at the old Siggins homestead, at West Hickory, where he was born and reared, and which he purchased after the death of his mother in 1870. He had a wide acquaintance throughout that entire region, where he was esteemed for his many sterling qualities and especially for his honesty and friendly character.
He was born June 12 1845, and in 1878 was married to Emma C. Neill, of Neilltown, Forest county Pa., who survives him. He also leaves one daughter, Miss Alice N. Siggins, who is principal of the West Hickory schools. Dr. J. B. Siggins of Oil City and Judge John Siggins of Tidioute are brothers of the deceased. He also leaves one sister, Mrs, J. Y. Barnes, of Ripley, N. Y. The funeral will be held at the family residence at 2:30 o'clock on Thursday afternoon/—Warren Evening Times, 12 June 1918; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.

  204 ii. Alice Neill Siggins, born September 1881 in Pennsylvania, died 12 April 1969 in West Hickory, Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania; buried in Siggins Cemetery, West Hickory, Pennsylvania.264 She lived in West Hickory, Forest County, Pennsylvania and was the author of the Siggins material (dated 1958) in the “Neill Papers.” Alice was a teacher, one position being in Warren (Pennsylvania) sub high school, where she taught mathematics.

Our cousin Alice Siggins had a tragic ending. On Saturday evening, 12 April 1969, Alice, age 87, was at home with her housekeeper in West Hickory when they were confronted at the door by a man with a rifle, who it turned out was distraught. He wanted money. They refused him and he shot Alice, the bullet traveling through the shoulder and chest, and Alice apparently died instantly. (The man, with a minister, shortly turned himself in to the police.). There were several accounts of this sad episode in western Pennsylvania newspapers, one being the extensive details in the Derrick (Oil City, Pennsylvania), 25 and 26 March 1970; online in the "Stories" section of ancestry.com.

71. THOMAS4 ALEXANDER NEILL (Sarah3 McCaslin, Nancy2, William1); born 14 April 1853 (?1858) in Neilltown, Pennsylvania; died 3 November 1931 in Oil City, Pennsylvania; married Hattie Whitman, born September 1865 in New York state, deceased several years by the time of Thomas's death in 1931. By the time of the 1900 federal census, Thomas, Hattie and daughter Bessie had recently moved from Pennsylvania to Paw Paw Township, Marion County, West Virginia; no occupation listed for Thomas in 1900.265 In 1920, Thomas and Hattie were living in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia, where Thomas was enumerated as "manager oil" (census page 8A). For many years, Thomas was an official for the South Penn Oil Company.

THOMAS A NEILL RETIRED OIL CO. OFFICIAL DEAD
Thomas Alexander Neill, 73, prominent figure in the oil industry and for many years general superintendent of the West Virginia district for the South Penn Oil company, died in the Oil City hospital at 2:33 a. m. Tuesday after an extended illiness.
Mr. Neill had been associated with the oil industry all his life and was widely known in the fields of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. His connection with the South Penn company extended over a period of many years and he was known throughout the eastern fields.
For many years Mr. Neill served in the capacity of general superintendent of the company in the West Virginia district with headquarters at Fairmont. He retired from active duty almost eight years ago and since that time has resided with his sister Mrs. A. J. Siggins of West Hickory. . . .
He was a son of John and Sarah McCaslin Neill, pioneers settlers of Neilltown, and was born in Neilltown on April 14, 1853 [or 1858]. He is survived by one daughter Mrs. Frederick Hood[?] of Pittsburgh; one sister, Mrs A. J. Siggins of West Hickory, with whom he resided and one granddaughter, May Louise Hill. His wife, the late Hattie Whitman Neill died several years ago. Mr. Neill was also an uncle of the late Dr. J. B.
