Generation Three 1-2-3-4 >          5. MARY3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 28 June 1802; died 13 November 1875; buried in the Neill plot, Neilltown Cemetery;46 married ISAAC NEILL, born 1 September 1800 in Chester County, Pennsylvana,47 a child of William and Jane (Jordan) Neill. Polly Neill was mentioned in her father’s will. An 1848 quit claim mentioned Isaac Neill and wife Mary.48 The “Neill Papers,” page 21, also lists Isaac Neill as the husband of Mary (Polly) Neill. Letters of Administration in the estate of an Isaac Neill were granted to William Neill, William T. Neill and William Henry, 15 October 1851.49 But this Isaac could be either the Isaac Neill who married Mary (Polly) McCasland or the Isaac Neill born circa 1788, who was an uncle of Isaac, born circa 1800— see #5 and #9 of Neill Descendants Report. In 1870, Mary Neill was listed as head of the household in Harmony Township.50 Children of Isaac and Mary (McCasland) Neill (all born in Pennsylvania):51 + 33 i. Jane4 Neill, born circa 1828; married Jesse Burchfield. 34 ii. James Neill, born circa 1830; married Mary J. (Molly) Black, born circa 1841. The family lived in Harmony Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania in 1870, when James was listed as a grocery and dry goods merchant. Children known from the 1870 federal census (all born in Pennsylvania): (a) Clement Neill, born circa 1864. (b) Lyla A. Neill, born circa 1866. (c) Minnie Neill, born circa 1870. Also in the household in 1870 was Theodore Jones, dry goods clerk, born circa 1840.52 35 iii. Nancy A. Neill, born circa 1832; married Robert Cochran. She was probably the Annie, age 37, “dressmaker,” in the 1870 census for Harmony Township.53 36 iv. William Hampson Neill, born circa 1834; died 16 May 1889; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; married Hannah Newland, born 9 June 1848; died 2 September, 1913; buried in Neilltown Cemetery.54 Their children (all born in Pennsylvania): (a) Lynford Neill, born circa 1868. (b) Edna Neill, born circa 1873. (c) Martha (Mattie), born circa 1876. In 1880, the family was living in Foster Township, McKean County, Pennsylvania, where William was in charge of an oil lease.55 Also with the family in 1880 was Effie Corts, born circa 1863 in Pennsylvania. + 37 v. John Neill, born circa 1836; married Eliza Reed. + 38 vi. Josiah Neill, born 6 March 1842; died 1903; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; married Letha (Eletha) Bell. 39 vii. Mary Lucinda Neill, born circa 1842, baptized in Concord Church, recorded 14 September 1842.56 40 viii. (tentative) Joseph Neill, married Martha Lee. He was not mentioned in the 1850 federal census; the name and spouse are from the “Neill Papers,” page 21. 6. JANE3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 23 July 1803; died 13 March 1879 of pneumonia;57 married 182858 WILLIAM T. NEILL, born 13 June 1804; died 13 December 1873,59 buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Titusville.60 William T., “although a familiar figure in Titusville for many years,” did not move to Titusville [presumably from the Pleasantville area] until December 1868.61 William was a child of William and Jane (Jordan) Neill. His wife Jane McCasland Neill, besides being mentioned as a Neill in her father’s will, was mentioned as William Neill’s wife in a quit claim.62 In 1844, William T. Neill and wife Jane sold land in Allegheny Township to Samuel Parshall.63 Witnesses were William Hamilton and James H. Neill. The Samuel Parshall was the Samuel Parshall who married (first) Zibiah Fleming, a daughter of Andrew and Ann (McClintock) Fleming and second Lucy Ann Henderson, a daughter of David and Jane Watson Henderson, see #11 of Fleming web site, generation three, web page 1. William T. Neill was a respected business man, with large stock holdings, and a director of both the Savings Bank and Exchange Bank [Titusville?].64 Both banks failed in 1873, and William T. Neill died shortly thereafter. William T. Neill was a friend of Samuel Bates,65 author of Our county and its people. Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Samuel Bates, page 826, finishes his biography of William T. Neill with these words: “A quarter of a century has passed since his internment in Woodlawn cemetery [Titusville, Pennsylvania], but a fragrance floats over his memory. The writer discharges a grateful duty in the above tribute to a man whom he personally knew only to remember his character with the highest respect. The world would be good if all the inhabitants were like William T. Nancy4 Neill, born 17 January 1829 in Venango County, Pennsylvania; died 28 May 1914 in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; married Charles Rupert Church. NN ii. Louis Neill, born circa 1830. In 1880, Louis, single and listed as a servant, was living with his brother Samuel T. Neill. 42 iii. Mary Jane Neill, born circa 1832; died 26 September 1880 of heart disease; buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Titusville, Pennsylvania. She lived in Washington D. C. but apparently returned home before she died; she was living with her brother Samuel T. Neill and family in 1880. Mary Jane did not marry.67 + 43 iv. Joseph Anderson Neill, born circa 1834; died 5 March 1896 in Washington D. C.; married Elizabeth Pennell. 44 v. William Neill, born circa 1836. William apparently was deceased by 1899. 45 vi. Julia Ann Neill, born circa 1838-40; married Elias H. Berry who died before the 1880 federal census for Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, when Julia was listed as a widow living in the household of her brother Samuel T. Neill and family. In 1910, Julia, widow, was living as a lodger in the household of Susan Lyons, age 59, in Titusviille, Pennsylvania. The 1910 census reported she had no children, living or dead.68 + 46 vii. Samuel Tate Neill, born 16 July 1841 in Neilltown, Pennsylvania; died 4 August 1896 in Cape May, New Jersey; married Julia Laura Sinclair. 47 viii. David J.Neill, died 12 June 1843; buried in the Neilltown Cemetery.69 7. JAMES3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 16 August 1806,70;married HANNAH NEILL, born 16 August 1806 in Allegheny Township, Venango Couty, Pennsylvania,71 a daughter of William and Jane (Jordan) Neill. She was mentioned as Hannah McCausland in her father’s will (see #2 of Neills Descendants Report). In 1860, the family was in Allegheny Township,72 where James McCasland was listed as a farmer. This James McCasland would be the James McCasland, clerk of the Concord Congregation in the 1840s and 1850.73 Children of James and Hannah (Neill) McCasland:74 + 48 i. Joseph4 McCasland, born circa 1831; died 1904; married (first) Jane Anderson; married (second) Sarah (Sarrell?) McElhoe. + 49 ii. William McCasland, born circa 1832; died 7 February 1890; married Elizabeth McFate. 50 iii. John McCasland, born circa 1836. According to the “Neill Papers,” page 22, his name was John Jackson McCaslin (no dates) and he married Mary Noss. But the “Neill Papers” also has William C. Neill marrying Mary Noss. Possibly he was the John McCaslin, age 68, enumerated in Oil Creek Township in the 1880 federal census with Mary McCaslin, age 72. The census reports the parents of both John and Mary were born in Ireland. 51 iv. Nancy J. McCasland, born circa 1838; married William Bonney.75 There is a petition for a guardian for Nancy McCasland, daughter of James McCasland, 26 August 1843. William Neill was appointed guardian.76 52 v. James McCasland, born circa 1839. The “Neill Papers,” page 12, does not list James as a son of James and Hannah (Neill) McCasland. 53 vi. Hannah Louisa McCasland, born circa 1843. Hannah Louisa McCasland was baptized in the Concord Church, recorded 1843.77 She married Plinn Mather.78 54 vii. Samuel Wilson McCasland, born circa 1845. Samuel was baptized 3 February 1845.79 55 viii. Cyrus Smith McCasland, born circa 1846. He was baptized 1847.80 8. NANCY3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 20 March 1810; died 29 July 1841; buried in Neilltown Cemetery, Harmony Township, present–day Forest County, married ROBERT JORDAN NEILL (a child of William and Jane (Jordan) Neill), born 22 September 1801 in Chester County, Pennsyvania; died 13 April 1871; buried in Neilltown Cemetery, Harmony Township, Forest County.81 Robert’s second wife was Elizabeth Morrison. Robert Jordan Neill’s will was written 20 February 1870, recorded 16 September 1871.82 The will mentions wife Betsy Mae (this would be Robert’s second wife, Elizabeth Morrison), daughters Sarah and Nancy Jane and grandson Robert Black, see #9 of the Morrison web site. Children of Robert and Nancy (McCasland) Neill (all believed born in Pennsylvania):83 + 56 i. Sarah4 Neill, born 26 August 1833; died 10 February 1915; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; married William Wallace Black.   57 ii. Hannah Neill; born 1836; married Eli Berlin, born 1835 in Pennsylvania; died 1909. Both Eli and Hannah are buried in Neilltown Cemetery, where Eli’s stone states he was a Civil War veteran.84 Eli and Hannah (Neill) Berlin had 10 children.85 Eli Berlin was a farmer. Children known from the 1870 and 1880 federal censuses when the family was living in Kingsley Township, Forest County, Pennsylvania (all born in Pennsylvania):86 (a) John A. Berlin, born circa 1861. (b) Elizabeth Berliln, born circa 1863. (c) Ida Berlin, born circa 1866. (d) Rilla (daughter), born circa 1870. (e) Robert Berlin, born circa 1863. (f) Edith Berlin, born circa 1866. (g) Mabella Berlin, born circa 1868. By 1900, still in Kingsley Township, the children had left home; and Eli and Hannah were living with granddaughter Julia Flynn, born May 1892 and an adopted daughter (can not make out the name), born August 1884.87   58 iii. Elizabeth Neill; born circa 1838 in Pennsylvania; married Roland Iland, born circa 1840 in Canada. According to the “Neill Papers,” Roland and Elizabeth Neill Iland had four children, names not known. One of the children is confirmed from the 1880 federal census when they were living in Petrolia, Butler County, Pennsylvania and Roland was working on an oil well (census page 550). (a) Edward Iland, born circa 1871 in Pennsylvania. Possibly the family was living in Liberty Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania in 1900, but the census page had faded.   59 iv. Nancy Neill; married John Black. According to the “Neill Papers,” they had one child, Robert Black (see Robert J. Neill’s will above). 9. JOHN3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 1812; died 1896; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; married MARY RYND, born 11 April 1808; died 7 March 1884; buried in Neilltown Cemetery,88 where her stone reads that she was John’s first wife. Mary Rynd was a daughter of John R. and Nancy (McCasland) Rynd (see #21 of McCasland Descendants Report: hence John and Mary (Rynd) McCaslands were first cousins. I have no information on children of John McCasland and a possible second wife. Possible John McCasland married his first cousin, Jane McCasland Young (#15), after Mary Rynd McCasland died. This could be interpreted from Throop’s (1987) cemetery lists, page 78, who lists Jane Young as the second wife of John McCasland. John’s first wife, Mary Rynd, had died in 1884. John R. and Nancy (McCasland) Rynd (parents of Mary Rynd) were mentioned in Bell (1890), page 648. Mary Rynd McCasland’s father was John R. Rynd [Sr.] born 1777; died 1849; he was a son of Ambrose Rynd, born 1738 in Ireland.89 Ambrose Rynd mentioned in his will90 son John [R.] Rynd, “my three granddaughters, Mary, Ann and Eliza,” and “my three grandsons, James, Bruce [probably he was Brook], and John.” The will also mentions Ambrose’s daughter Margery Gordon and Margery’s daughter Agnes Gordon. John R. Rynd’s will91 mentions his wife, Nancy, their sons Brook Rynd, James R. Rynd, Daniel Rynd, John R. Rynd, Jr. and “my daughter Mary intermarried with John McCaslin.” Mary (Rynd) McCasland’s brother, John R. Rynd, Jr., also married a McCasland, Nancy McCasland, who was a daughter of James McCasland and wife— #18 and #22 of McCasland Descendants Report.” Confusing? Yes. These John/Mary–Rynd/McCasland intermarriages are best viewed as a chart. There was a John McCasland who was an administrator of Pliny Sheldon’s estate in 1859.92 Pliny Sheldon had married Elizabeth Lytle (#18), a daughter of John and Sarah (Morrison) Lytle. He would probably be this John McCasland, (husband of Mary Rynd). Children of John and Mary (Rynd) McCasland:93   60 i. James4 McCasland; born circa 1841. James was not listed as a child in the “Neill Papers”; however the “Neill Papers,” page 22, lists a Johnson McCaslin as a child of John and Mary Rynd McCasland. This Johnson McCasland married a Mrs. Purter. +   61 ii. Nancy Elizabeth McCasland; born 1842; died 1920; married in 1863 Henry Josephus Dunham. 62 iii. Mary Ann McCasland; born circa 1844, baptized 1844 in the Concord Congregation;94 married Marshall Goss,95 born circa 1838 in New York. In 1864, J. Johnston McCasland and Marshall Goss, both of Pleasantville, sold land in Allegheny Township to John Carll of Brooklyn, New York, for $8000.96 In 1880, Mary Ann and Marshall (no children listed) were living in Pleasantville, where Marshall was enumerated as an oil producer. In 1900, Mary Ann and Marshall were still in Pleasantville, where Marshall was enumerated as a “capitalist.”97 63 iv. [—?—] McCasland (female); born circa 1846. +   64 v. John Wilson McCasland;born circa 1847; married Addie Parker. 65 vi. (adopted) Lizzie Watson McCasland; born circa 1867 in Pennsylvania; her father was also born in Pennsylvania and her mother born in New Jersey or New York (I can not decipher).98 10. SARAH3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 7 March 1815; died 4 February 1892; married (first) ROBERT MCCRUM; died either 3 August 1844/184599 or 7 July 1854, re his stone,100 buried in Neilltown Cemetery—see #10 of McCasland Descendants Report for a discussion of this disparity. Sarah married (second) JOHN NEILL, born 22 February 1797,101 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania,102 died 17 July 1878. Both Sarah and John are buried in the Neilltown Cemetery, Harmony Township, present–day Forest County.103 John Neill, who was a first cousin of Robert McCrum, was a child of William and Jane (Jordan) Neill. John Neill had six or seven children by his first wife, Mary McFate Neill—see #7 of Neill Descendants Report and #41 of McFate Descendants Report. The bible records, page 2, in the “Neill Papers” show that Robert’s mother was Agnes (Jordan) McCrum, a sister of Jane Jordan who married William Neill (#2 of “Neills”). Children of Robert and Sarah (McCasland) McCrum:104 +   66 i. Joseph McCrum; born 4 September 1838. Joseph married Isabella Beck.105 +   67 ii. Nancy Elizabeth McCrum; born 1842; died 1923; buried in Neilltown Cemetery; married Lewis W. Brown.   68 iii. William B. McCrum born 1844; died 1927; buried in Neilltown Cemetery. His stone indicates he was in Company F, 112th New York Infantry in the Civil War.106   69 iv. John McCrum, listed in the “Neill Papers,” page 22, no additional information Children of Sarah McCasland and second husband John Neill:107 +   70 v. Emma Neill; born November 19 1856; died 1936; buried in Siggins Cemetery, Hickory, Township, Forest County;108 married Andrew Jackson Siggins. +   71 vi. (tentative) Thomas A. Neill; born 1858; married (tentative) Hattie Whitman. 11. ELIZABETH3 MCCASLAND (Nancy2, William1); born 23 November 1817; died 17 January 1866; buried in Neilltown Cemetery. Elizabeth was not married when her father made his will in 1843. In 1850 Elizabeth, unmarried, was living with her sister Jane and Jane’s husband William Neill and family.109 Elizabeth married 2 December 1851 JOHN A. BLAUVELT.110 In 1850, John Blauvelt, born circa 1823, was enumerated living alone in Allegheny Township.111 Children of John and Elizabeth (McCasland) Blauvelt:112   72 i.
