1790-1840 CENSUS AGE CATEGORIES (except for 1790, pertaining here to
"free white males and females").
1790: (1) free white males 16 and over, (2) free white males under 16,
(3) free white females, (4) all other free persons, (5) slaves.
1800 and 1810 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16,
(3) 16 and under 26, (4) 26 and under 45, (5) 45 and over.
1820 (males and females): (1) under 10, (2) 10 and under 16, (3) 16 and
under 26, (4) 16 to 18 (males only),* (5) 26 and under 45, (6) 45 and
over. *The extra category was for males, to determine the total
manpower that could be called up in times of war. Besides confusing
people interested in their ancestors, this category apparently confused
census takers, resulting in many reports of (3) and (4) that are
suspect.
1830-1840 (males and females): (1) under 5, (2) 5 and under 10, (3) 10
and under 15, (4) 15 and under 20, (5) 20 and under 30, (6) 30 and
under 40, (7) 40 and under 50 (8) 50 and under 60 (9) 60 and under 70,
(10) 70 and under 80, (11) 80 and under 90, (12) 90 and under 100, and
(13) 100 and over.
The 1910 Miracode census is an index of the 1910 United States Federal

available (2001) for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana,
Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,
Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West
Virginia. The Miracode census index is available online for some, but
not all (as of 2001), of these states from Ancestry.com.

- There is valid documentation for John and William being children of William Lytle (Sr.). The evidence for Nancy Lytle is circumstantial, but I am convinced she is a daughter (or less likely a sister) of William Lytle, Sr., and will subjectively list her as the first born child. Even if future work shows that the Nancy Lytle who married Joseph McCaslin was not of our line, I feel including her here is valuable, since I have emphasized her inclusion is tentative, and the information provided should be of value to workers of the McCaslins and Neills of Venango and Forest County. Note the large interval between the birth of Nancy (1779) and her brother, William, (1795), with only one known sibling (John) between.

- Roger Williams, Cambridge graduate, chaplain in Essex, Separatist, and fresh off the ship Lyons came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in February 1631. Williams immediately got into trouble with the governing body by suggesting civil magistrates had no authority in religious matters. So out to Salem he went. But his views were out of step there as well, although most everyone thought he was a likable, charming person. Roger Williams then went to Plymouth Colony. In a year he was causing an uproar, claiming the Pilgrims might not have any right to the land they had settled, because the land belonged to the Indians.. Bradford and the other Pilgrims were glad to see Reverend Williams on his way back to Salem. In Massachusetts the authorities purposed to ship him back to England as a nuisance. But instead he was steered to Narrangsett Bay and the Indians, and eventually across Narrangsett Bay where he was given land by the Indians and their chief, Canonicus. Roger Williams founded the town of Providence and the first Baptist Church in America. According to Dillon (1973), pp 210-211, Roger William “. . . established complete religious toleration and almost complete civil liberty . . . Roger Williams, without turning native, became a profound admirer of the Indians and a student of their languages. There have been far too few Roger Williamses in the history of America, indeed in the history of the world.” [This account of Roger Williams was taken from page 257 of Morison, S. E. (1952) (editor). Of Plymouth Plantation. 1620-1647, by William Bradford. Sometime Governor Thereof. Alfred A. Knopf, 448 pages; and pages 210-211 of Dillon, F. (1973). The Pilgrims. Doubleday and Company, Inc.
